Why I Considered Doing a Bodybuilding Competition at Age Fifty

I turned 50 this past December, and as many who reach this magic age do, I looked back at my past and wondered about my future. In all the thinking I did about milestones I had reached and goals that I might have had but didn’t reach, there was one that stood out strongly from the others. Six pack abs! I’ve always wanted them. But have never had them. Even in all the years I was a serious gym rat.

I love the look of muscular women as long as they are drug free—no roids—and I decided, what better time to add muscle to my body than at a time when it would normally be going in just the opposite direction-menopause. Menopause usually means loss of muscle mass, so I decided to create my own personal mind-body challenge and pack on muscle instead of watching mine whither.

When I told my 13 yr-old daughter about my plan she said, “Women can’t be pretty AND have muscle TOO!” I thought to myself, “Why the hell not? Woman can absolutely have muscles and be physically strong just like men. We know the amazing inner, emotional strength women possess– why not physical as well?” It was on for me, both for myself and to create an example for my daughters and other women. I decided for sure—I was going to body build and maybe then compete!

As often happens when we get clear on intentions and desires, the Universe brought me Catherine, a female trainer who did her first Figure Competition at 47 and who now trains and judges natural bodybuilding competitions. She is the perfect example and teacher for me to walk the walk of my personal mind-body challenge. She has been my coach and trainer since June and can happily say that I have slimmed down, packed on some muscle and now see the essence of my six-pack abs! Remember ladies we are never too old to create challenges for ourselves to continue personal growth. So I invite you to think about past goals never met, or allow yourself to dream up new ones, and then—just go for it!
